The Ultimate Guide to Multi-Generational Family Photos on Cape Cod: Everything You Need to Succeed

There’s something truly magical about a Cape Cod summer. It’s the smell of the salt air, the sound of the waves hitting the shore, and, most importantly, the rare moments when the whole crew is finally in one place. Whether you’re gathered at a family cottage in Falmouth or renting a big house in Bourne, having the grandparents, parents, cousins, and kids all together is a special occasion that deserves more than just a few blurry cell phone snaps.
Planning cape cod family photos for a large, multi-generational group might feel a little like herding cats, but I promise it doesn’t have to be stressful. In fact, these sessions are often the most fun because they celebrate the legacy of your family. As a cape cod family photographer, I’ve seen it all, and I’m here to help you navigate the logistics so you can focus on making memories.
Why Multi-Generational Sessions are a Must
We often get caught up in the yearly "immediate family" photos, but there is something deeply sentimental about capturing the "big picture." Having the grandparents surrounded by their grandchildren, or seeing three generations of smiles in a single frame, creates a visual heirloom. These images aren’t just for you; they are for the kids to look back on twenty years from now.
Cape Cod provides the perfect, timeless backdrop for these stories. The neutral tones of the dunes, the soft blues of the water, and the golden light of the "Magic Hour" ensure that your portraits will never feel dated.

Timing Your Session for Success
When you’re dealing with a large group, timing is everything. On the Cape, we live and die by the "Golden Hour", that hour just before sunset when the light is soft, glowy, and incredibly flattering.
Book Early: Our summer calendar fills up months in advance. If you know your vacation dates, reach out as soon as possible.
The Vacation Schedule: I usually recommend booking your session toward the beginning of your trip. This gives us a "buffer" day in case we run into a typical New England rain shower.
Nap Times vs. Sunset: For the littlest family members, a sunset session can sometimes clash with bedtime. I suggest a late afternoon nap and a hearty snack right before the session to keep the energy high!

Coordination Without the Chaos: What to Wear
The days of everyone wearing matching white t-shirts and khaki pants are long gone (thank goodness!). For a multi-generational session, the goal is cohesion, not uniformity.
Pick a Color Palette: Start with 3–4 coordinating colors. Think "Coastal Classic", soft blues, creams, seafoam greens, and maybe a pop of coral or soft yellow.
Mix Textures and Patterns: If Mom is wearing a floral dress, maybe Grandma wears a solid linen top, and the kids have subtle stripes. This adds depth to the photos.
Comfort is Key: You’ll likely be walking in sand or on grassy paths. Encourage everyone (especially the grandparents) to wear comfortable shoes or even go barefoot if we're on the beach!

The Flow of a Large Group Session
One of the biggest anxieties families have is, "How are we going to get everyone to look at the camera at once?" The secret? We don't always need you to! While we will definitely get that "everyone smiling at the camera" shot for the mantle, some of the most beautiful cape cod family photography comes from the unposed, candid moments.
A typical session usually flows like this:
The "Big Group" Shot: We start here while the kids are fresh and the outfits are crisp.
The Grandparents: Photos of the grandparents with all the grandkids are always a priority. It’s pure joy.
Breakout Families: We’ll spend time with each individual family unit.
The Original Crew: Portraits of the grandparents with their grown children (yes, you're always their babies!).
The Candids: This is where I step back and let you play. Walking down a path, splashing at the water's edge, or just laughing together.
If you're worried about feeling "stiff," don't be! I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve. You can also read more about how to pose (and not look stiff) for your family photos.
Choosing the Perfect Cape Cod Location
The location sets the tone for your session. Depending on where you are staying, we have a few fantastic options:
The Classic Beach Session
Nothing says "Cape Cod" like the beach. Whether it's the giant dunes of Wellfleet or the calm waters of the Bay, the beach offers plenty of space for large groups to spread out. Places like Scusset Beach or the shores of Bourne offer that iconic look.
Wooded Trails and Garden Paths
If the beach feels too windy or bright for some family members, the Cape has stunning wooded paths and parks that offer soft, filtered light. These locations are often a bit more "sheltered" and provide a cozy, intimate feel.

Pro-Tips for the "Wild Cards" (Kids and Pets!)
Let’s be real: toddlers and dogs are the unpredictable stars of the show.
For the Kids: Bring "mess-free" snacks and water. Let them be little! Some of my favorite shots are of kids exploring the tide pools or running through the grass.
For the Dogs: We love four-legged family members! Just make sure the beach or park we choose is pet-friendly, and bring a leash and some treats to keep them focused.
For the Adults: Relax! If the parents are stressed, the kids will pick up on it. Trust your photographer to capture the magic even in the middle of the "chaos."
Making the Memories Last
Once the session is over and you’re back home, don’t let those beautiful images sit on a hard drive! Large family sessions are perfect for creating custom albums or gallery walls. Seeing these photos daily serves as a reminder of the bond you share. If you're looking for ideas, I've put together some tips on what to do with your photos once the holidays are over.
